Damian Luca

Damian, as a boy. At the age of 13 an uncle of Damian, Fanica Luca, asked him to come to the “School-for-Music n°1”   in Bucarest. His uncle was the most famous panflute player at that time.   So, Damian Luca became his first student.   Many other well-known players followed his example.   And Damian made it through this school with wonderful results.

A life of music begins.

Being the best pupil in his class, he got the chance to play with the orchestra “ Barbu Lautaru “, the most representative   orchestra in traditional music of Romania. That ensemble brought the young Damian to Hongaria, Bulgaria, Poland,… He received four times a golden medal at the “ International Festival for the Youth “. As television came, the orchestra was asked to do some big shows even in the United states ( The Ed Sullivan-show ). This little instrument brought Damian all over the world.

Play like nobody else does.

Damian   made a very big contribution to the development of the techniques on the Panflute. Working hard and consistent, but also thanks to his gifted talent, Damian LUCA achieved a technique on that instrument, which is unique world wide!   Damian was asked by the American gouvernement to teach at the University of Washington. There he dazzled everyone with his virtuosity and his rakish humor.

His repertoire consists of a broad range of musical styles. As a interpreter, he distinguishes himself by his unique technique when playing classical and folkloristic music.
He has made many LP and CD recordings with different styles of music on them. From Albinoni and Bach to contemporary music (Time to say goodbye and My heart will go on) and Gypsy music. In the month of December 2000 Damian LUCA together with Gheorghe ZAMFIR recorded a new CD. In his native country - Romania - he has the title of "Artist Emerite", to be compared with "Sir" in English. He now lives in Brussels and has been teacher of the panflute on several music-schools in The Netherlands for 15 years. Damian LUCA is one of Romania's extraordinary great musicians, who took over the difficult task to present this fascinating instrument, the Panflute, with grand virtuosity all over the world.
